It’s that time of year again when everyone is heading back to school and settling into new routines. Gathering new supplies, clothes and schedules are on most parents minds this time of year but there may be other things we should all, parent or not, be prepared for.
No matter what your schooling situation is, even homeschool families like ours can find ourselves in situations year round that we can be exposed to lice. Think beach trips, play dates, sport activities and so on.
We have been fortunate enough to not have experienced lice in our household and yes, I know this is not a fun subject to mention, but we must all assess that the risk is there and be prepared if it were to happen.
WHO IS AT RISK?
Any person can get lice. Each year 6 to 12 million people in the US have a lice infestation. Children aged 3 to 11 are the most commonly afflicted with lice because they have more head-to-head contact than older children.
HOW DOES LICE SPREAD?
Lice spread by running from one head to the other. Luckily, they can’t survive more than 24 hours without their food supply. That’s why physically removing them from the head is so important.
WHAT DO I DO IF IT HAPPENS?
First, don’t panic and know it will be over soon. When you visit the store, you are going to see lots of lice removal shampoos. But did you know, they’re not really shampoos? Those products are actually pesticides. While they may kill lice, they can’t kill nits (lice eggs), and that’s why they don’t work. It’s the COMB, not the chemicals that will get rid of the lice and nits. Most of the lice combs on the market slip right past the tiny .3mm-wide lice eggs which are called nits. To get rid of lice and nits, you need the right comb. This is where WelComb® comes in. The WelComb® has rigid teeth just the right distance apart and a beveled edge that is able to get right down to the scalp to capture and remove lice AND nits.
WHAT IS THE WET COMBING METHOD?
There is NO pesticide or natural solution that can harm or kill nits. Nits are lice eggs. With this, the ONLY way to ensure that nits won’t hatch and continue to spread is to physically remove them with the wet combing method.
Wet combing is all about disrupting the lifecycle of lice. Simply removing live lice is enough to kill them, and removing nits prevents them from hatching and continuing the infestation.
To use the wet combing method for lice and nit removal all you need is:
- Water because lice freeze in place when wet, making it easier to capture and remove them.
- Conditioner to lubricate the hair and make it much easier to comb through.
- A WelComb® to physically comb out lice and nits.
While wet combing is low cost, all natural, safe and effective, it does take time and patience. But if it means ridding your child of a lice infestation, it’s worth it!
